Motivational Interviewing Returns to Ukiah
We invited Dr. Igor Koutsenok back to Mendocino County for an Advanced Motivational Interviewing (MI) training. This training deepens understanding and application of MI techniques, especially with behavioral change and addiction treatment. Dr. Koutsenok, the Director of Clinical Psychiatry at UC San Diego and a prominent figure in the field of psychiatry and addiction, emphasizes the importance of MI as a client-centered approach that aids in motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. After coming to Ukiah in September and October 2023, this advanced training with us included:
- In-depth Exploration of MI Principles: Participants learned about the main principles of MI, which focuses on collaboration and autonomy. This helps professionals understand how to effectively engage clients in conversations about change.
- Practical Application: The training involved role-playing and case studies, allowing participants to practice MI techniques in realistic scenarios. This hands-on approach is crucial for developing the skills needed to apply MI effectively in their work.
- Focus on Specific Populations: Dr. Koutsenok often tailors the training to address the needs of specific populations, such as individuals with substance use disorders, enhancing the relevance of the training for participants working in those areas.
Importance for Professionals
Engaging in advanced MI training is vital for professionals for several reasons:
- Enhanced Client Engagement: By mastering MI techniques, professionals can foster a more collaborative relationship with clients, which is essential for effective treatment and support. This approach helps clients feel heard and understood, increasing their willingness to engage in the change process.
- Evidence-Based Practice: MI is an evidence-based intervention that has been shown to be effective in promoting positive behavioral changes. Training in MI provides professionals with evidence-based strategies. These tools help clients overcome ambivalence and commit to change.
- Improved Outcomes: Professionals trained in MI can help lead clients to lifestyle changes, particularly in addiction and mental health contexts. This can lead to improved treatment outcomes and overall client satisfaction.
